Roque’s senatorial chances good as others

UniTeam senatorial aspirant Harry Roque said given the support of President Duterte and party-mates Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos and Sara Duterte, his chances of becoming a senator are “as good as the other 63 other candidates.”

Roque said that his goal is to win a Senate seat, regardless of ranking, to create policies that would improve the lives and safeguard the rights of Filipinos as guaranteed in the Constitution and international treaties.

“Since I’m very realistic, I only aim to make the top 12. I believe the people know they won’t waste their votes on me given my track record as a legislator, public servant, and human rights lawyer,” Roque said.

“The President, Apo Bongbong, and Inday Sara believe in my right to life and health platform. All I need is your mandate for me to serve as a Senator,” he added.

The El Shaddai Fellowship recently endorsed Roque, who claimed he has unfinished business as a lawmaker. He served as a party-list representative for 18 months before being appointed Duterte’s spokesman.

The health and human rights advocate added, “As a former congressman, 10 of my bills became laws. I have 210 House bills waiting to be updated and re-filed in the Senate to make the Philippines a better nation.”

He is proud of being the principal author of the Universal Health Care law, which enabled the government to vaccinate 68.9 million Filipinos against Covid-19 fully. As of May 2, the health department has also administered 13.5 million booster shots.

Roque was also the primary sponsor of the free tuition for public college and university students, national HIV and AIDS policy, school feeding program for elementary pupils nationwide, and free irrigation service to farmers.

He also taught law in the Philippines, the United States, and Singapore.

“I use the law to bring justice to human rights victims here and abroad. I will use this experience to reform our justice system, economy, and public safety,” Roque said.

Roque’s legislative agenda for the Senate include poverty alleviation measures such as ‘zero hunger’ and potable water for all Filipinos by 2028.

He would propose to create a National Health Service as the implementer of universal healthcare coverage. The agency would replace the graft-ridden Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).

Roque vowed to speed up the administration of justice and disposition of legal cases through the ‘three-day court hearing’ rule and the Victims Compensation Fund, wherein the government would directly indemnify victims of murder.
