‘CP snatcher’ killed in Malate shootout

AN alleged snatcher was killed while his cohort was wounded following a shooting encounter with a Manila policeman who responded to shouts for help from a student whose cellphone they snatched the other night in Malate, Manila.

Dead on the spot was suspect Joshua Mansal, of 1269 Bambang St.,Tondo. He took a bullet to the head from PCpl. Symon Marasigan, of the District Traffic Management Unit of the Manila Police District (MPD).

Delber Sta. Rita, 21, of 1748 Antonio Rivera St.,Tondo, was arrested with the aid of barangay tanods as he tried to get the gun of Marasigan.

PEMS John Charles Duran,of the MPD-homicide section, said the suspects snatched the cellphone of their 18-year-old female victim along Leon Guinto St. in Malate at 9:30 p.m.

The victim shouted for help and an angry mob chased the suspects who were aboard a lone motorcycle. A Grab rider reportedly blocked their path and both motorcycles fell to the ground along the southbound lane of Leon Guinto St.

While Marasigsn was approaching the suspect, Mansal reportedly put his hand in his slingbag, prompting the cop to fire, killing the suspect instantly. The victim’s cellphone was recovered along with four other units. Sta. Rita was charged with robbery and direct assault before the Manila Prosecutors’ Office.
