Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna is encouraging doctors serving in the city to spare some time or use their free time attending to senior citizens or sick residents who cannot go to the city hospitals or even health centers for treatment.
Lacuna, a doctor herself, does the same thing during her regular door-to-door visits to the seniors or bedridden, where she provides free consultation, medical assistance, wheelchairs if needed, among others.
The visits to the bedridden residents are done at the sidelines of her ‘Kalinga sa Maynila‘ forum which is held in various barangays on a regular basis.
In the said fora, Lacuna is usually joined by Vice Mayor Yul Servo-Nieto, Congressmen and City Councilors representing the district where the forum is held and several city officials as well.
Lacuna expressed concern that some senior citizens or bedridden patients no longer seek medical check-ups and instead self-medicate.
Worse, she said there are some who opt to just continuously use the drugs that have been prescribed to them a long time ago.
The lady mayor discouraged these patients from all these and urged them to seek medical checkup, treatment and “Lagi kong hinihikayat na sila ay magpa-checkup dahil kadalasang nangyayari na di na sila nakakabalik na sa ospital so kung ano ang iniinom nilang gamot, kahit di na sila nagpapa-checkup tinutuloy na lang nila di na sila nagpapacheckup. ‘Wag po natin gagawin ‘yun,” Lacuna said.
“Ang pinakamainam po nating gawin, tiyagain po natin dalhin natin ang mga kamaganakan sa mga health center pacheckpp natin tutal minsan lang naman ‘yan baka kailangan na palitan ang kanilang gamot o baka di na akma sa kanila o baka may kailangang gawing laboratoryo para sa kanila,” she added.
