PNP lawyers undergo refresher course

A TOTAL of 125 Philippine National Police lawyers coming from the Philippine Military Academy, the PNP Academy and other sources of commission in the national police force have been required to undergo a four-day Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) seminar in Camp Crame under the auspices of the University of the Philippines Law Center.
The four-day MCLE seminar consists of 14 subjects that will serve as an update course for PNP Legal service officers/lawyers assigned in Police Regional Offices and National Support Units, said PNP spokesman Chief Supt. Wilben M. Mayor. Mayor is one of the participants in the MCLE, being a lawyer from Philippine Military Academy Class 1985.
The subjects include Legal Ethics, Trial and Pre-trial Skills, International Law and International Conventions, Legal Writing and Oral Advocacy, Updates on Substantive and Procedural Laws and Jurisprudence and other MCLE prescribed subjects.
Instructors in the seminar are Attorney Dominic CM Solis, chairperson Eugenio H. Villareal, Assistant Solicitor General Renan E. Ramos, Prof. Irene S. Resureccion, Prof. Leo D. Battad, Assistant Commissioner Elizabeth S. Zosa, Prof. Eduardo A. Labitag, Atty. Ariel V. Villanueva, Police Inspector Levy B. Lozada, Prof. Rowena EV Daroy Morales, Atty. Jose M. Jose, Atty. Arthur P. Autea, Judge Caridad W. Lutero and Prof. Jay L. Batongbacal.
The MCLE seminar is in accordance with a resolution from the Integrated Bar of the Philippines on Mandatory Continuing Legal Education.
The IBP, the country’s biggest lawyers’ group, said the continuing legal education is required to members of the IBP to ensure that throughout their career, they keep abreast with law and jurisprudence, maintain the ethics of the profession and enhance the standards of the practice of law.
A IBP resolution states that their members are required to complete at least 36 hours of continuing legal education activities approved by an MCLE committee constituted by the Supreme Court every three years.
Also joing the seminar are PNP Legal Service director, Chief Supt. Ulysses Abellera of PMA Class 1984; his deputy Senior Supt. Roel Obusan of PMA Class 1986; PMA Class 1985 members Chief Supt. Erickson Velasquez, Senior Supt. JV Javier, Senior Supt. Sonny Phillipps, Senior Supt. Danny Macatlang, Senior Supt. Eduardo Garado  and Senior Supt. Bartolome Tobias; PMA Class 1986 members, Senior Supts. Lyndon Cubos, Elmo Sarona, Archie Gamboa and PMA Class 1987 members, Senior Supts. Jonas Calleja and Joel Napoleon Coronel and PNPA Class 1984, Chief Supt. John Sosito, who is also a lawyer.
