22 held for illegal fishing

AT least 22 fishermen were arrested by authorities for illegal fishing activities Friday morning  off the coast of Barangay Tangos in Navotas City.

Navotas police chief P/Col. Rolando Balasabas said combined forces of the police and Bantay Dagat caught the fishermen on board Princess Gel Fishing Boat while in the act of raising their fish net at the territorial water some 11.5 kilometers off the shoreline of Bgy. Tangos South at around 7:50 a.m.

Col. Balasabas said policemen and Bantay Dagat were on sea patrol when they chanced upon the fishing boat illegally fishing using the active fishing gear and fine mesh nest known as “Hulbot” which was totally ban under Administrative Order 246-1 series of 2018 of the Philippine Fisheries Code.

All the crew of the fishing boat and its pilot identified as Antonio Ganuhay, 50, of Navotas Fish Port Complex, Pier 4 Bgy. NBBN, his co-pilot Ronaldo Apostol, 52, of E-54 Kapitbahayan Bgy. NBBS Kaunlaran and machine operator Rex Perez, 19, of Phase 1A Kapitbahayan were charged with violation of R.A. 8550 as amended by R.A. 10654 of the Philippine Fisheries Code before the Navotas City Prosecutor’s Office.

The local government of Navotas represented by City Agriculture Office head Yzabela Bernandina Aranas-Nazel will serve as the complainant against the arrested fishermen.
