ALIAGA, Nueva Ecija -- A construction backhoe owned by a contractor doing Package 4 of the Central Luzon Link Expressway (CLLEX) project here suddenly caught fire while allegedly under repair last Monday.
Town police head Major Marlon Cudal said his office got a phone call at 6:50 a.m. from Norman Mallari, safety officer of the Qingdao Municipal Construction Group, CCLEX contractor, stating that one of their heavy equipment was seen on fire.
When responding lawmen arrived, Cudal said the backhoe was still on fire, prompting firefighters at the site to put out the blaze to prevent further damage.
Cudal said the duty guard identified as Sherwin Lagasca discovered the fire and immediately informed his superiors about the incident.
While manning his post about 300 meters away from the burned equipment, he said he saw nobody coming near it before the fire broke out.
Quoting the initial findings of the local fire station, Cudal said the backhoe is undergoing repair and the fire was believed caused by mechanical or electrical problem.
“Negative naman demand ng NPA,” Cudal said when asked if there was any extortion demand on the firm coming from the terrorist New People’s Army group.
